Posture & DSE Assessment

#Our DSE Assessment Service complements, but is provided separately to OSM.

The service is designed to assist you to put management systems in place as part of your Health & Safety Policy to reduce the risks of employees developing chronic musculoskeletal injuries associated with incorrect layout and use of computer workstations.

Using display screen equipment (DSE) can, if not managed effectively, have the potential to give rise to a variety of ill health conditions including visual fatigue, stress, back pain, upper limb disorders, repetitive strain conditions and other types of musculoskeletal problems.

#The Health & Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 require employers to minimise the potential risks associated with the use of Display Screen Equipment by ensuring that workplaces and furniture are well designed and work tasks effectively managed.

You will need to consider the following:

  • Is there regular use of display screens as a significant part of the work ?
  • Does anyone use a keyboard, mouse or other input device ?
  • Are people complaining of discomfort, aches and pains ?

You will need to

  • analyse individual workstations, and assess and reduce risks; ensure workstations meet minimum requirements;
  • plan VDU work so that staff have breaks or changes of activity; provide eye and eyesight tests for VDU users who request them, and provide spectacles if special ones are needed;
  • and provide health and safety training and information for VDU users.

The consequences of doing nothing are:

  • employees developing musculoskeletal conditions which become chronic and difficult to treat.
  • enforcement action against your company by the HSE.
  • civil action against your company by employees for breach of duty of care.

For the Company with up to 30 employees we provide;

  • a DSE Assessment Service to enable you to comply with health and safety legislation.
  • an individual report for each DSE user, making recommendations for correct workstation layout.
  • on site advice to individuals on correct layout and best posture for DSE use.
  • provision of written information about risks associated with DSE use and how to minimise those risks.

For companies with more than 30 employees

  • training for nominated employees to ensure their competence as DSE assessors within your company to enable them to carry out these duties on your behalf.
